* NOTTING Hill and Ealing high-school pupil Katie Surridge (“Teenagers forge green ideals in wild”, TES, August 23) wants environmental studies to be compulsory. As of this week, teaching about sustainable development and Local Agenda 21 is statutory in citizenship at key stage 4. It has been statutory in science, geography and design and technology since 1999. Although she attends an independent school, her teachers are encouraged to take account of this. See www.nc.uk.netesd for details.
