AS he helpfully points out (TES, May 26), John Andrews has not been general secretary of the Professional Association of Teachers since 1997. The motivation for my original letter was to counter the implication of the April 21 article that PAT’s membership was, unlike the other unions, still in decline. This is no so. PAT is gaining ground. Its current membership has grown from the December 1998 figure of 31,590 quoted to 32,731 (audited figure for end of 1999) and the latest figure available is 33,587 and rising daily.
