I WRITE as a school governor for more than 40 years, many in deprived areas, who has a great admiration for teachers struggling against that background.

The judgment of Mr Justice Cave in 1893 placed the school teacher in loco parentis to his or her pupil. Would the stipendiary magistrate wh recently sentenced a teacher to a suspended prison sentence for an alleged single slap, hand down the same sentence to a caring parent for the same offence under the same circumstances of sustained and extreme provocation?
