Postscript

SINCE the introduction, three years ago, of the current GCSE German exam, girls, especially in the CD ability range, frequently tell me that it is a low priority because they have coursework which demands their immediate attention and that German isn't and never will be useful.

I conclude that the wide vocabulary topic knowldge, communicative skills and a good knowledge and understanding of grammar is demanding too much.

I understand that the 2003 exams will veer even more to-wards language use and high levels of grammatical accuracy. I fear for the future of German.
