FEARS regarding the “official” guides to exams (TES, August 13) are well-founded. However, bordering on the scandalous are the official national test papers at key stage 1 for English and maths - promoted by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.

These official booklets, published by HMSO, cost pound;6.99, are a reproduction of the 1997 tests and bear the slogan “Help your child get the best result”. Key stage 2 and 3 versions are also available at pound;5.95.

Such material is not only a national disgrace and a “scam” by the QCA but it denigrates the role of primary teachers and puts more pressure on parents’ purses.
