More than pound;22 million was “wasted” on training teachers who did not go on to teach in Wales, according to the Liberal Democrats. Figures collated by the party from official statistics show that the country produced almost 3,000 teachers more than necessary, at a cost of around pound;7,500 each. The General Teaching Council for Wales has already suggested that there are too many trained teachers in the system and called for a better balance between supply and demand. But the Assembly Government has accused the Lib Dems of “faux outrage”, pointing out that the figures were based on a snapshot at six months after teachers graduated, which was not a comprehensive employment record. They also refer to the period from 2004 to 2008.
