City and Guilds have launched a pound;500,000 grant fund to “help people to change their lives through education and training”.

The scheme, called Future 100 - celebrating the centenary of City and Guilds’ Royal Charter next year - is open to anyone over the age of 16 who is not currently on a full-time course. Grants can be used to fund career breaks, retraining, childcare, accommodation or transport costs and even tuition fees where no other grant is available.

City and Guilds-qualified celebrities - including gardening broadcaster Alan Titchmarsh, and television chefs Gary Rhodes and Jamie Oliver - have backed the scheme, which will see 100 people awarded grants of between pound;2,000 and pound;10,000.

Dr Nick Carey, City and Guilds director general, said: “With such a long history of dedication to training and education, it is exciting to be able to celebrate that history by giving 100 people this great opportunity for the future.”

Application forms can be collected from any branch of Superdrug, by phoning 0845 600 5550, or applications can be made via the internet at www.future100.org.uk
