Ministers have committed Pounds 20 million over three years to boost early intervention schemes following the evidence from north Edinburgh.

All councils are receiving a share of the funds and are currently devising local approaches. They will be able to employ nursery nurses, class teachers, learning support staff and classroom assistants. Councils will also be able to employ more psychologists and home-school link personnel as well as cover the costs of staff development in literacy and numeracy.

Up to 10 per cent of funds can be spent on classroom materials and evaluating progress.
