PIANO and cello teacher Rhuna Martin, who gives music lessons from her home in Hammersmith, London, decided to raise money to help children in Afghanistan after reading about their plight. She printed out sponsorship forms, and invited all her pupils to take part in a sponsored practice.

They had to practise their instrument every day of the 12-week term. In total, 21 pupils raised pound;600, and a friend added pound;200. Even those who were not able to maintain the practice schedule were able to show their generosity. “One boy gave me all his pocket money,” said Ms Martin.

Twelve-year-old Lucy Haenlein, who raised pound;110 for the appeal, said:

“It was an effort, but it was worth it. It was brilliant to work every day and improve on what I’d done on the piano.”
