Chris Woodhead still has a great deal to learn if he ever wishes to get the best out of a much maligned teaching force. Not so long ago he criticised a tiny percentage of teachers as being “incompetent”. Now he criticises a relatively small number of headteachers for lacking leadership qualities.

What price praise, Mr Woodhead? After all, as the statistics inform, most of us are doing a tough job well.

No worthy teacher would think of criticising a child’s work by saying, “I’m sorry, but you’ve got 10 per cent of your answers wrong.”
