There was a fusty, patronising odour about some comments from adults on the wave of pupil war protests that swept Britain last week.
Perhaps the most condescending criticism was that the pupils were just “going along for the laugh”, as if carnival spirit and camaraderie were not a vital part of the experience of protest marching for the tens of thousands of adults beside them!
The Diary therefore raises a toast to the joie de vivre of a customised chant raised by a small group of teenage schoolgirls at a peace march in Cambridge: “One, two, three, four: we don’t want your bloody war Five, six, seven, eight: skipping school is f***ing great.”
