Islamic high school to open in Glasgow

- Scotland’s first Islamic secondary school is to be opened in Glasgow by a group of Muslim parents. The Glasgow Community Education Association has bought Abbotsford House, a former state school in the Gorbals, for #163;400,000 and plans to rename the B-listed Victorian building The Islamic Institute.

Horsemeat supplied to six Edinburgh schools

- Frozen mince supplied to six Scottish schools has been found to contain horsemeat, a council has confirmed. Edinburgh City Council has carried out tests on 85 meat samples taken from its catering premises since 14 February and one, taken from the kitchen of Pirniehall and St David’s primary schools, tested positive for horsemeat.

#163;9,000 fee ‘very little to pay’

- The principal of Scotland’s oldest university has claimed that #163;9,000 a year is “very little” to pay for an education at the prestigious institution. Professor Louise Richardson of St Andrews said: “I think - I’m going to say something that is very unpopular - #163;9,000 a year is very little to pay for a St Andrews education because it’s worth a great deal more.”

Lego-mad Scots teenager’s Paul Oakenfold video

- A Lego-loving Scots schoolboy has put himself in the frame for a career in film - after producing a video for a superstar DJ. Morgan Spence, 13, from Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, was commissioned by music maestro Paul Oakenfold to create an animation, using scenes made entirely of Lego bricks, for his new single Who Do You Love?

Pupils ‘should not be taught lists of kings and queens’

- Children should not be taught facts at schools because pupils are turned off and bored by lists of “kings and queens”, teachers’ leaders said. The National Union of Teachers warned that the Westminster government’s proposed new knowledge-based curriculum should be dropped because it represents a “pub quiz” approach to education.
