pound;60,000 boost to help Gaelic tongue survive

- The Scottish government has announced a pound;60,000 investment in the Gaelic language. Education secretary Michael Russell said the money would go towards early years support, a Gaelic book scheme and scholarships for Gaelic students based in Nova Scotia, Canada. He said: “We all have a duty to help the Gaelic language to survive.”
Anger over cuts to free school travel

- East Ayrshire is to become the latest local authority to increase the distance children must live from their school before being awarded free travel. North Lanarkshire and North Ayrshire have already increased the minimum distance.
School dinner blogger meets hero after return from African mission

- School-dinner blogger Martha Payne has met her hero, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The nine-year-old pupil at Lochgilphead Primary, Argyll, appeared on the BBC’s flagship The One Show hours after flying into London on an overnight flight from Africa. She had been visiting Malawi to see how the cash raised by her blog was being spent.
Girl’s suicide follows YouTube bullying plea

- A Canadian schoolgirl killed herself five weeks after she uploaded a nine-minute video to YouTube describing years of bullying that drove her to drugs and drink, it has been claimed. Amanda Todd, 15, from British Columbia, is believed to have taken her own life last week.
Schoolgirl shot in head by Taliban is flown to the UK for `prolonged care’

- Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl and peace activist shot in the head by Taliban because she campaigned for the right to be educated, arrived in the UK yesterday for medical treatment. “Doctors . believe she has a chance of making a good recovery on every level,” said Dr Dave Rosser, medical director of Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
