Most parents would send their child to private school

- More than half of parents would send their child to private school if they could afford to, while almost 60 per cent believe that the educational standards are lower in state schools, a new poll has claimed. Many believe that private schools provide a better standard of education, according to the survey, which was commissioned by the Independent Schools Council.

Teacher who sparked Europe-wide police hunt charged with abducting teenage girl

- Teacher Jeremy Forrest has appeared in court via videolink charged with abducting a teenage girl. The 30-year-old was arrested in Bordeaux in France on 28 September after a European arrest warrant was issued. Following extradition to Britain, Forrest was charged by Sussex Police on 10 October with abducting a child, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Bid to lure Scots teachers to England

- A recruitment drive has been launched by Kent County Council on Facebook as it highlighted a teacher shortage. The council, whose initiative is called “Your Perfect Kent Day”, wants to attract “high-flying” and “inspirational” teachers. It needs more experienced male primary teachers, headteachers and art, languages, English, maths, chemistry and biology teachers.

- A primary teacher branded “a paedophile in the Jimmy Savile mode” took pupils on trips before sexually abusing them. Caven Muirhead, 56, who blushed when giving evidence, groomed two boys before abusing them in caravan parks, woods and in his bedroom in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, as his elderly parents sat downstairs.

Greeks wary of brothel owners bearing gifts after school donation

- When a Greek school in Patras found itself without money for books or a photocopier, one interesting entrepreneur offered a hand. Soula Alevridou, owner of two very successful brothels, attempted to donate EUR3,000 but instead managed to infuriate local officials. Fuming parents and teachers have been forced to return the money.
