Primary teachers are more likely to have received on-the-job training than their secondary counterparts, according to research commissioned by the General Teaching Council.

Only 29 per cent of secondary teachers had been given in-school group training in the past year compared to 48 per cent of primary teachers, the survey of 10,000 teachers found.

The poll, carried out by the National Foundation for Educational Research, revealed a similar gap for those taking part in school self-evaluation, with 51 per cent of primary teachers saying they did so frequently compared to a third of secondary teachers.

Overall it revealed that a fifth of teachers felt their professional development needs had not been met at all in the past year. The proportion saying their needs had been met in part was 56 per cent, compared to 57 per cent last year, with 21 per cent saying they had been met in full, up slightly from last year’s 20 per cent.

The poll also found that only 28 per cent of teachers had been coached or mentored in the past year.
