Argyll and Bute is to hold consultations on the future of three primaries: the 18-pupil St John’s in Oban and two on Islay, Portnahaven (11 pupils) and Newton (17 pupils).

The council’s cuts package is still to be confirmed but envisages the closure of 18 primaries, a fifth of the total, to save Pounds 505,000.

Two other primaries, Ardentinny (9 pupils) near Dunoon and Dalavich (5 pupils) on Loch Awe, will also close if the Secretary of State approves.
