Clare Short is rather more generous to the cause of worldwide education than she was to the people of Montserrat in their search for compensation after a volcano erupted.

Writing in The TES in the week that a diplomatic row brewed over the International Development Secretary’s remarks about the islanders’ “irresponsible” demands (“It will be golden elephants next”), she promises that Britain will target primary education as the first step in eliminating world poverty.

She underlines the Government’s commitment to the OECD target of achieving worldwide primary education by 2015.

She makes no reference to education in Montserrat, but she does emphasise the Government’s support for the Commonwealth.
