Peter Roberts, principal of Stockport College for the past seven years, has been appointed chief executive of the new Leeds City College, one of the biggest jobs in further education. The 60,000-student college will be launched on April 1 and Mr Roberts will take charge in July.

The college, which will have an annual turnover of Pounds 70 million, is the product of a merger between Leeds College of Technology, Leeds Thomas Danby and Park Lane College.
