Governors appointed his deputy, Ray Ellis, as acting principal the following day. In a statement, the college said Professor Khan would be taking a sabbatical during his notice period and that he planned to “pursue other professional interests”. Gill Alton, the institute’s vice-principal who is credited with driving the college’s higher education growth, was appointed acting deputy principal.
