CHRIS Fulford, who was sacked from his post as principal of Blackpool sixth-form college, has died, aged 68, writes Steve Hook. He died in hospital in Reading, Berkshire on Friday from a rare disease called Wegener’s Granulomatosis, which affects the immune system.

Mr Fulford was suspended from the college and eventually sacked from the pound;83,000-a-year post over allegations of financial irregularities and an “inappropriate relationship” with a former student.

He accepted a financial settlement from the college - which he led for 20 years - in June this year, dropping his case for unfair dismissal and breach of contract. Mr Fulford recently moved from Preston, Lancashire, to Henley, Oxfordshire “He was a charismatic figurehead for an excellent college, who was always concerned with the welfare of all his pupils,” said his son Adam.

Mr Fulford’s funeral is due to take place at noon on Monday, September 17 at St Cross Hospital Church, St Cross, Winchester, Hampshire.
