Colleges will also be involved in providing off-the-job training for young people who opt for places on the environment task force or with the voluntary sector. This will be equivalent to at least a day a week for the six months of each new deal placement, a total of 26 days. The training can be day release or blocked but must not be at the end of the six months.
* The 50 per cent who are not qualified to SVQ level II or above include a quarter who will need help with pre-vocational and basic skills because their literacy and numeracy is below SVQ level I.
* The priority for off-the-job training will be in building up core skills and working towards a qualification since many will not be able to achieve a full qualification within the six month new deal period.
* Part-time training will attract a payment of pound;750 per participant with the final third instalment paid only on achievement of qualifications and employment.
