It is not surprising that your reporter found student teachers at Kingston University to be more concerned at the prospect of coping with large classes than anything else (TES, February 7). Most experienced teachers would agree with them.
Good independent primary and middle schools offer the prospect of working with small teaching groups of children from all sorts of backgrounds. Add to that high standards of behaviour in a caring environment, supportive programmes of induction and top class resources and facilities, and there is every reason for newly-qualified teachers to consider starting their careers in such schools.
