In 2005, two major education competitions, TES Newsday 2006 and BECTA’s Creativity in Digital Media Awards, have added categories to reflect work with digital photography and documentaries.

The TES (stand E20) is launching Newsday at BETT 2006. Look out for the new Epson-sponsored photo-journalism category: it “encourages students to add an extra dimension to their story through the use of photography. Winning images must be originals and capture the essence of the story in a thoughtful, creative and unique manner. There are a number of aspects to consider when producing a newspaper image and judges will look at a variety of criteria, including relevance, impact, colour, composition and print quality.”

More details of the competition are at www.newsday.co.uk.

The 2006 winners of BECTA’s awards will be announced at the National Museum of Photography Film and Television in Bradford in March 2006. Examples of the 2005 digital stills category can be seen online at www.becta.org.uk.
