Michael Wilshaw’s assessment (“Here to help you improve”, 4 May) that an adverse inspection leads to school improvement is totally flawed, based as it is on the combative style of English inspection. The Ontario, Canada, model of support and correction before failure is a more successful, cheaper and less stressful model. With so many satisfactory and weak schools, Ofsted has blatantly failed in its central remit of improving schools.

Dominic Cragoe, Head, Sheringham Community Primary School, Norfolk.
