An Ulster college manager has been recognised by Charles Clarke for building bridges between divided communities. Dianna Farrelly has been named a Local Hero for her work at Armagh college, where 1,500 people have benefited from the activities she has organised.

The Home Office’s Local Heroes scheme recognises people who have made a significant contribution to improving the life of their communities.

Ms Farrelly has managed a series of projects including one which helps Loyalist ex-prisoners with basic skills. Another brings together the victims of 30 years of sectarian violence through community-awareness meetings as part of the college’s cultural diversity programme.

She was honoured at an annual event in London which also saw the launch of the Year of the Volunteer 2005, aimed at encouraging people to get more involved in their communities.
