These awards are aimed at raising the profile of primary science, recognising talented teachers and engaging children in science. Nominations open each autumn. Open to all primary teachers.

The Royal Society Partnership Grant
This scheme offers up to pound;3,000 for teachers, scientists and engineers to work together on inspiring activities involving pupils aged 5 to 18. Any UK teacher can apply for a grant, awarded directly to the school, to meet costs such as equipment, travel and teacher supply cover.
Perhaps most importantly, these projects give school students a taste of science and engineering, and their relevance for today’s society.

Science Learning Centres
These centres offer up to pound;500 for teachers or technicians who want to link their courses with school-based work. Applicants should show how they would use the money for their school. This should include at least three days’ school-based work. Tutorial support is available. Teachers can use this work towards a 30-credit M-level accreditation.

Teaching Awards Trust
The trust aims to celebrate excellence and promote best practice.
Award categories each year include specialist teachers and secondary teachers. All schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are invited to nominate their most outstanding headteachers, teachers and teaching assistants.
Nominations for next year must be endorsed by the senior manage-ment team.

Salters’ National Awards for Science Technicians
Open to science technicians with five or more years’ experience working in schools and colleges for students to age 18. Nominations can be made by the headeacher or head of science. Closing date May 1, 2007. There are four awards of pound;250 each.

Do you know a physics or primary science teacher who is cosmically inspiring? Does he or she make science or physics astronomically exciting and challengingly cool? If so, why not nominate them for an Institute of Physics Teachers’ Award?

British Nuclear Group Whiteboard Awards
Enter an interactive whiteboard lesson to support either the science, design and technology or the maths curriculum for primary or secondary education. First prize in each category, for teachers themselves, is pound;1,000, with two runners-up prizes of pound;250. Closing date July 31.

Castme (Commonwealth Association of Science, Technology and Mathematics Educators) Castme is offering prizes of up to pound;500 for an original educational project which addresses the social context of science, technology and maths. Projects should include a substantial account of teaching or other educational work, eg curriculum development or teacher training, and should not have been published before. The Alexander prize of pound;350, supported by the ASE, is for women educators working under difficult conditions. Projects must be submitted by September 30.

Pulse
Funded by the Wellcome Trust, Pulse funding is for projects exploring the teaching of science through the arts, particularly the performing arts.
Applications can be for workshops or school-based projects for grants of Pounds 10,000, or for touring projects up to pound;50,000. Innovative project formats are encouraged, but funding is now closed for this year.

Nuffield research bursaries
These bursaries are offered to post-16 students to enable them to take part in four to six-week science-based projects in a university or industry setting during the summer holidays. Each year about 600 bursaries are managed by 19 regional co-ordinators.
