When Meldrum Academy in Oldmeldrum opens its doors for the first time in August, it will feature an integrated library for pupils and the public alike.
The dual library idea was pioneered in the 1980s but this new custom-built facility with a cutting-edge information technology centre will be a far cry from the first at Alford Academy. Then the community library was separated from the school library, says Gerald Moore, the council’s libraries and heritage manager.
“We realised that integrating the two into one space to deliver one service had a lot to commend it. Previously the public section was only open 10 hours a week. At a stroke we were able to open for 52 hours a week. The overall cost was small and it meant making better use of staff resources.”
Later similar library services at Aboyne Academy, based in adjacent rooms, were also combined.
“A most important point is that the libraries are run by qualified librarians,” says Mr Moore. “The joint provision seems to have worked well in both communities.”
