* Cambridge Reading is one of Cambridge University Press’s most ambitious ventures to date. A reading scheme for primary schools which has taken three and a half years of intensive development and an investment of more than Pounds 2million, it will eventually boast 101 titles, more than 90 of them in colour. The first two phases - for reception and Year 1 - were published last month. Materials for the whole of key stage 1 will be available by September.As well as story, poetry and information books, Cambridge Reading includes Big Books, Flipover Book, phonic games, worksheets and computer software.

* Storyworlds, a new reading project for key stages 1 and 2, due to be published in April, is being promoted vigorously by Heinemann with a Storyworlds hotline, newsletter and roadshow. It provides, they say, exceptional support for the beginning reader, stories “with real appeal for young children” and includes a very wide range of styles and contexts. * Star Science, a new primary science scheme with an emphasis on progression, is launched this month by Ginn. Claimed to be the first primary science scheme designed to deliver the l995 curriculum, it is divided into 10 themes including Ourselves and Others; Animals; Sound; Change and Materials. Used as a whole programme, it aims to offer full coverage of the curriculum requirements for science. Ginn is also promoting Abacus, a new primary mathematics scheme due to be published in April. Its straightforward management system will cater for differentiation, says Ginn, and special teacher cards will offer “unrivalled support” to teachers. * The first phase of the new Longman Primary Maths project for children aged 4-6 is launched this month. It is, says the publisher, comprehensive, easy to use, progressive throughout the scheme and designed to build pupils’ confidence with number and number facts. * English to GCSE is described by its publisher, Oxford University Press, “as a unique revision and practice book for GCSE students, covering all the skills they will need for both their Language and Literature examinations”. It advises students on planning coursework and revising for their exams and helps them measure their progress with annotated examples of students’ work.
