Schools which give pupils a say in the way they are run are happier and more successful, according to a leading headteacher. Bernard Trafford, head of Wolverhampton grammar school, who has carried out research on the effectiveness of school councils, told a conference in London that rules and policies drawn up jointly by pupils and staff were more likely to be adhered to, and there was better communication overall. It also helped overcome feelings of alienation among pupils, who felt respected and valued.
