“Where are all the professors?” Brian Morris, president of the Scottish Educational Research Association asked plaintively.

Morris was reflecting puzzlement over the poor turnout at the association’s Dundee conference. Despite the plethora of professors in education - thanks to the academic aspirations of colleges both within and outwith universities - few booked into Dundee University’s brand new accommodation called West Park Villas. (“We’ll just have to see what kind of a state the students leave it in when they come back next week,” said the lady on the desk gloomily).

Some of the research glitterati did appear, but only to deliver a paper and depart. Can the attractions of this week’s European researchers’ conference in Seville really be preferable to a weekend by the Tay?
