MOST questions begin with the letters “wh” - -such as “what”, “when”, “where” and “which”. But this has not always been the case, a linguistic expert reveals in this week’s TES Primary magazine.
In Old English, these words started with an “h”, giving “hwaet”, “hwanne”, “hwaer” and “hwilc”,according to writer Sue Palmer. Her Little Alphabet Book, a collection of short essays about letters of the alphabet, comes free with this month’s issue of TES Primary, available for pound;2 from newsagents.
