WE KNEW Chris Woodhead was a tough negotiator - he drove a hard bargain over his new contract, as you may recall through gritted teeth. But now we learn his demands don’t just extend to the Secretary of State.

A couple of weeks ago, he addressed almost 500 headteachers at Hampshire’s primary heads’ conference in Basingstoke. He soon had them eating out of his hands, but it was a fleeting visit: time would be too tight even to stay for lunch, Woodhead informed the organisers beforehand.

He therefore laid down some very particular demands: a parking space next to the rear entrance so he could leap straight out of his car and on to the podium. And two packed lunches, one for him and his assistant to eat in the car as they sped away afterwards.
