PACKS ON road safety and transport are being given to 200 Scottish secondaries, as part of an initiative developed by the RAC.

Ignition has been used in English schools for several years, targeted on 14-17s. Three-quarters of accidental deaths among 16-19s happen on the roads.

The pack, launched at Bellahouston Academy in Glasgow on Wednesday, also includes a module entitled “Keep ON Moving” which aims to help pupils explore the impact of transport on their environment and health.

Calum MacDonald, the Transport Minister, said: “This new initiative is especially welcome as it seeks to foster responsible attitudes about road safety before formal driving lessons begin.”
