Charles Clarke, the Education Secretary, clearly knows that if you want to maintain your image as a political tough-guy, you have to keep up appearances, even when you’re off-duty.

So, to Ipswich station on Monday morning, when a less-than-hardy FErret was taking shelter from the cold, huddled over a warming cup of coffee. But who should be found on the platform nonchalantly reading the paper as if it were still summer? Why, none other than Charles Clarke - in shirtsleeves.
