Discuss our relationship to the planet. Think through food and ethics. In the case of any food, from turtle soup to low cost supermarket chicken, should we be asking: where has this food come from? How was it obtained? How did the animal live and die?

Focus on the treatment of turtles by humans as one case study among others in attitudes to the planet. Was the human side of the production a fair trade operation? Was the animal side one of farming, harvesting or exploitation? If God is real and God is creator, what might God’s attitude towards the process be? - Approval, indifference, hostility, despair? Even plant food raises issues of treatment of human employees, use of pesticides, care for the soil and future crops etc.

What is the impact on our self-understanding as fragile creatures inhabiting a world that is finite, on loan and under threat? Humankind can appear to act thoughtlessly, selfishly and materialistically. Pupils can debate the sobering moral and spiritual choices to be made.
