Four out of five children leave the Reading Recovery programme successfully and results have improved each year since it was launched in 1992, says a monitoring team from London University’s Institute of Education. Figures for the past three years showed a steady increase from 70 per cent of six-year-olds leaving the scheme successfully in 1994, to 72 per cent in 1995, to 79 per cent last year.
The early literacy intervention programme imported from New Zealand, reaches 4,500 children in around 30 education authorities.
