Your news item (TESS, February 6) about Glasgow’s shortage of supply teachers made me wonder.

I have been on Glasgow’s supply register since last August when I moved back to the city. I am in a permanent full-time post but now wish to do less travelling and indicated to Glasgow that I would be available for long-term supply work.

Given that there are over 30 long-term posts waiting to be filled, you might think that I would have been asked to attend an interview, although why that should be necessary when I have been teaching for many years I do not know.

But no, I have not. Furthermore, when I telephoned a couple of weeks ago I was told that, because I am in a post at the moment, I would be passed over for any long-term work. For whom are they passing me over?

I now understand that Glasgow has been trying to get retired teachers to take up posts. What is going on in Glasgow?
