Digital channel E4 is inviting teenagers to take part in the E4 School of Performing Arts, which will put pupils through their paces at a traditional drama school.

It is billed as the alternative to popular shows like X-Factor (right) and Grease is the Word. “Overnight stars don’t always last,” said a spokeswoman. “We want to show that the quick route to fame isn’t always best.”

Auditions will take place in Manchester, Glasgow and London and May, with the series broadcast in the autumn. The crew are looking for dancers, singer-songwriters and actors aged 16 to 24 with “raw talent”.
