I’ve brought 90 Year 7 pupils today and we’re coming back with another 40 tomorrow. We visit Lichfield Cathedral every year as part of a cross-curricular programme that the school runs at the end of the summer term.

In Year 7 RE the children look at Christianity and we visit our local church, which is evangelical. The Lichfield visit is in the middle of the two-year programme.

Next year we’ll look at the Life of Jesus and, in a way, it’s a link between the two years.The best thing about a visit like this is that it gives children different things. Some are impressed by the building, while others get something more from it.

I think about a cathedral or any religious building as a special place and I try to get the children to think in those terms as well.

We stand around the picture of St Chad and say St Chad’s prayer.

It’s a visit the students always enjoy. They are taken around in groupsof about 12 and they do an awful lot in the time available.
