The second largest teaching union, NASUWT, is calling off its industrial action against red tape on June 29, after instructing its school representatives on the bureaucracy circular which went out to schools last week.
General secretary Nigel de Gruchy said he feared continuing the action would deter heads from implementing the circular, which contains wide-ranging advice to schools on how to cut the administrative burden on teachers. “There’s nothing more we can flog out of the Government,” he said.
But the National Union of Teachers’ more limited action will continue for now. NUT leaders say it is so similar to the terms of the circular as to make no difference, but will protect members in schools failing to implement the document.
