FURTHER to the article by Margaret Cooling (TES, December 4), which refers to the possible reduction of time for religious education in primary schools - to accommodate the literacy hour -we remind readers that the position of RE remains unchanged.
We support the suggestion that religious texts be used in the range of materials resourcing the literacy hour. However, although links can be made in the development of skills that enhance both areas, learning objectives for RE must be focused on meeting the requirements of the agreed syllabus. Effective learning objectives must be specific and cannot be both literacy and RE focused at the same time.
