Of all the senseless acts of educational vandalism, the closure of the Scottish Schools Equipment Research Centre takes the biscuit (TESS February 9).

The cash crisis facing the new authorities may be the ostensible excuse but this is no more than deliberate underfunding of state education at its worst. A service which attracts such glowing commendations from science teachers and the HMI is a rare thing indeed and should not be allowed to disappear without a fight.
