The Retreat at Niddrie Mill Primary in Edinburgh is a room designed to offer a calm, safe and welcoming sensory environment through resources such as soothing music, cushions, quiet corner and displays. Managed by the behaviour support teacher, it provides a haven within school, where children and their families can access support and guidance with a variety of behaviour needs. Pupils regularly self-refer and such has been its success that a new mini-retreat is being developed for infants. Key to that success is the cohesive team approach and commitment of all school staff, coupled with close and regular contact with parents and carers who are invited to weekly Retreat “surgery” sessions, individual appointments and parentchild workshops.
