The impact of the funding formula on individual schools and local authorities is revealed in documents published today by the Department for Education.

Under the proposed formula:

  • 1.1m pupils (15 per cent of all pupils) attend schools that would gain 5 per cent or more, per pupil.
  • 2.5m pupils (36 per cent) attend schools that would gain 2 per cent or more.
  • 2.2m pupils (31 per cent) attend schools that would lose between 2-3 per cent.
  • 2.3m pupils (33 per cent) attend schools with funding that would be within 2 per cent of their current level.

Illustrative figures have also been provided to show how schools and councils budgets in 2016-17 would have been affected if the national formula were applied.

School losers

The government has decided to cap the amount that schools can lose under the formula by 1.5 per cent for two years, or 3 per cent in total. There are 596 schools that would see the maximum loss, according to calculations based on this year’s budgets. They include 560 secondaries, 35 through schools and one primary, the illustrative figures show.

School winners

According to the DfE the 10 schools that would have gained the most this year under the formula are:
