The Deputy Prime Minister will be glad of the vote of confidence in rail travel by East Renfrewshire Council. A new transport contract for pupils travelling from the village of Uplawmoor to Eastwood High centres on a train trip.

Those who used to take a coach to school will now go by bus to Neilston to board a train for Whitecraigs. The cost is pound;30,000 a year less, and there is a message for pupils, too, according to Jim Fletcher, the education convener.

“Using sustainable and joined-up transport in the shape of a local bus feeding into an electric railway is a valuable environmental lesson.”
