(Photograph) - The winner of this year’s Scottish Schools Ethos Award is Haddington Infant school, East Lothian. An unusual school in many respects, Haddington has 44 staff and more than 400 children, from nursery to Primary 3. A lot of effort goes into preparing children for “the big school” through close liaison and social activities with the primary, including a special “passport” scheme to ease the transition.Pupils take part in circle time (above) and anti-bullying initiatives run by volunteers. They perform well in conventional areas of the curriculum and are encouraged to show care and concern for others. They have formed close links with a community of Bosnians who have moved to the area and, following a teachers’ visit to Brazil, plan to build a school for street children.
