It may not be a well-known fact in Scotland, or even in England for that matter, that David Bell, Glasgow-born chief inspector of schools south of the border, was (is?) a Rangers fan. We can’t all be perfect.

It was probably no surprise therefore when he attended a football match recently to hear the ringing endorsement: “David Bell, you’re a shite and you know it.”

Bell was cheered, however, to realise that this word of encouragement was to a player of the same name fielded by his local team, Rushden and Diamonds in North Bedfordshire. Indeed, last season they ran out two players of the same name.
