England footballers star in a new charity campaign encouraging children to read more books.

Top players feature in a short film talking about their favourite books and why it is important to read. Alan Smith, the Manchester United player, is shown talking to a class about his memories of reading The BFG by Roald Dahl, team-mate Rio Ferdinand reads from another Dahl title, The Twits.

David James, the Manchester City goalkeeper discusses JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

The 16-minute DVD film, titled Reading The Game, is available free to every state school in England.
