The minimum pay rate for apprentices has increased from pound;80 a week to pound;95. The increase, announced at the 2008 TUC congress by John Denham, the former Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, took effect on August 1. Young women are likely to benefit most because they are more likely to receive the minimum pay rate. The average weekly pay for apprentices is more than Pounds 170 a week.
