Rise in degree trainees

NEARLY 6,000 people have enrolled in undergraduate teacher-training courses this September, a marginal increase from last year, up 0.3 per cent from 5,965 to 5,984. There was a big (23 per cent) increase in the number of students on academic education courses, up from 1,857 to 2,288. Some of these three-year degrees have been specifically designed to lead into one-year postgraduate teacher-training courses.
